Important Risk Planning Questions

Risk management planning is the process of determining how to approach and carry out risk management activities. The primary output of this process is the Risk Management Plan.

The Risk Management Plan provides a structured framework for the project manager, project team, and stakeholders to identify, analyze, and respond to potential risks.

Ultimately, the Risk Management Plan should address the following questions:

  • What is the risk?
  • Why should the risk be taken or avoided?
  • Should the risk be avoided altogether?
  • Can the risk be transferred?
  • Can the risk be mitigated?
    • How much will it cost to mitigate the risk?
    • What is the mitigation deliverable?
    • When is the mitigation deliverable due?
    • Who is responsible for managing the mitigation?
  • Should the risk simply be accepted, with a plan to address the consequences if it occurs?
