Proceed with Caution When Trusting AI With Your Data

Organizations and project managers are moving quickly to integrate AI into their workflows—and for good reason. The technology is already delivering real productivity gains.

That said, it’s important to be thoughtful about where and how we use it. AI systems can make mistakes, and when they’re given access to critical systems without proper safeguards, the consequences can be significant.

A recent story highlighted a worst-case scenario where an AI coding assistant reportedly deleted a production database and its backups. While details may vary, the broader lesson is clear:

AI should not operate without guardrails, especially in high-risk environments.

As we adopt these tools, we should prioritize:

Clear permission boundaries
Human oversight for destructive actions
Reliable backup and recovery strategies
Audit logging and fail-safes

AI is powerful—but like any powerful tool, it needs to be used responsibly.
