RACI Matrix

A RACI matrix is a project management tool used to clarify roles and responsibilities for tasks or deliverables within a project.

The acronym RACI stands for Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed, which represent different levels of involvement in completing a task. By defining these roles clearly, teams can reduce confusion, improve communication, and ensure accountability throughout the project lifecycle.

The Responsible role refers to the person or team who actually performs the work required to complete a task. There can be multiple responsible individuals depending on the complexity of the task. The Accountable role is the person ultimately answerable for the correct completion of the task. This person approves the work and ensures that the objectives are met; typically, only one person should be accountable for each task.

The Consulted role includes individuals or stakeholders who provide input, expertise, or advice before or during the task. Communication with consulted parties is usually two-way, as their feedback influences the outcome. The Informed role refers to people who must be kept updated on progress or decisions but are not directly involved in the work. Communication with informed stakeholders is usually one-way.

Using a RACI matrix helps organizations:

  • Structure project workflows
  • Avoid role overlap, and
  • Ensures that everyone understands their responsibilities clearly

A RACI matrix is especially useful in complex projects involving multiple teams or departments.
