The STP Strategic Planning Process

Strategic planning methodologies often follow the STP framework, a simple yet effective model for understanding an organization’s current position, defining its future goals, and determining how to achieve them. The STP process is a practical variation of Gap Analysis, focusing on identifying the gap between the present state and the desired future state—and then closing it.

S — Situation: Where are we now?

This stage focuses on gaining a clear, objective understanding of the current state of the organization.

Key questions include:

  • Where are we right now?
  • How did we get here?
  • What are our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats?
  • What internal and external factors are influencing our performance?

This step often involves data analysis, performance reviews, market research, and stakeholder input to build a realistic baseline.

T — Target: Where do we want to be?

In this phase, the organization defines its desired future state.

Key questions include:

  • What are our long-term goals and objectives?
  • What does success look like?
  • What specific outcomes are we aiming to achieve?

Targets should be clear, measurable, and aligned with the organization’s mission and vision. This step establishes direction and provides a benchmark for success.

P — Path: How do we get there?

This stage outlines the actions required to move from the current situation to the desired target.

Key questions include:

  • What strategies and initiatives will help us achieve our goals?
  • What resources are required?
  • What is the timeline for execution?
  • How will progress be measured and adjusted?

The “Path” phase translates strategy into actionable plans, including prioritization, resource allocation, and performance tracking.
