What’s Your STAR Story?

The STAR method is a proven interview technique that provides a clear, organized way to answer behavioral interview questions.

STAR stands for:

  • Situation – Describe the context or challenge.
  • Task – Explain your responsibility or objective.
  • Action – Describe the specific steps you took.
  • Result – Share the outcome and what you accomplished.

Using the STAR method helps you organize your thoughts and give complete, focused answers during an interview.

Sample STAR Interview Questions

Behavioral interview questions often begin with phrases such as:

  • Describe a time when you made a mistake at work
  • Tell me about a time you handled a difficult client
  • Give an example of a time you worked under pressure

These questions are intentionally open-ended because the interviewer wants to understand how you think, solve problems, and respond to workplace situations.

How to Structure Your Response

Begin by briefly describing the Situation and the Task. For example:

“I discovered an error that needed to be corrected quickly before it affected a client deliverable.”

Next, explain the Actions you took to address the situation. Be specific about your role and the decisions you made.

Finally, describe the Result. Whenever possible, include measurable outcomes or explain what you learned from the experience.

Tips for Answering STAR Questions

  • Prepare one or two examples from recent work, school, or volunteer experiences.
  • Organize each example using the STAR framework.
  • Practice telling your stories aloud so your delivery feels natural and confident during the interview.
  • Focus on your individual contributions, even when describing a team effort.
  • Keep your answers concise—aim for about one to two minutes per story.
